Caleb Mcduff Helmet Art
‘The helmet was a surprise for Caleb, his first painted helmet since his kart days, this one has a very special meaning’
When it comes to motorsports two wheels is my flavour of choice. When it comes to painting helmets I do like the car helmets best. So when Ian McDuff got in contact to ask for some assistance producing a brand new design for Caleb, I jumped at the chance. Ian was the perfect client, he left me plenty of room for input and creative freedom.
Caleb…
I hadn’t heard of Caleb before despite previously painting a helmet for his equally inspiring team mate Noah Cosby.
If like me, ( I really need to up my social media game and link up my drivers and riders) you haven’t heard of Caleb, you will. As I learned during the project Caleb is the worlds fastest deaf driver and he doesn’t mess about when he is on track. He has a very bright future in front of him with the drive and determination required to reach the top levels of the sport.
Caleb McDuff is one of those rare talents that makes you take a second look. He’s the UK’s only male deaf racing driver, competing at elite level in the Britcar Endurance Championship in a McLaren GT4 with Team BRIT. That’s big motorsport territory, and he’s making serious noise there – from multiple podiums to international appearances.
What makes Caleb’s story even more striking is that, despite being profoundly deaf, he uses custom communication tech integrated with his cochlear implants to race with full pit-to-car communication. No compromise. Pure instinct, skill, precision.
When it came to his new helmet design, the brief wasn’t your typical “do a logo and call it done”. The brief was:
Respect his heritage. Elevate his presence on track. Make it unmistakable.
Caleb’s original helmet was already iconic — it had roots in his Welsh identity — and this one had to take that concept and amplify it. Deep reds. Bold forms. Wales. Dragons. Identity. Not just decoration, but a graphic language that reads at speed and broadcasts personality even before he turns a wheel.
That blend of purpose and style is exactly why we do what we do here at X-Paint. We don’t just colour helmets, we design pieces that perform as part of the kit. That means:
-
Contrast that reads from a distance so it stands out on track
-
Flowing paintwork that complements racing lines
-
Durable high-build lacquer that survives abuse — heat, grit, asphalt
-
Clean integration of sponsor and team elements
-
All built in-house, hand-finished, never templated

Working with Ian and Caleb was refreshing. Ian trusts expertise, which always lets the best results happen. Too often designs get strangled by over-direction — this one breathed and grew into something genuinely striking.
And the future?
He’s not just racing — he’s breaking barriers. From karting championships to endurance podiums in the McLaren GT4, and now heading toward global exposure (including the USA), his trajectory is obvious and fierce.
So if you’re here because the helmet caught your eye, good. You’re in the right place.
We build custom crash helmets for people who want more than just a sticker. If you want a helmet that reflects identity, performance, and personality — something that looks amazing on track or on camera — we’re the ones building that.
